Awareness Walk on Visual Health for People with Diabetes

Diabetes has become the leading cause of irreversible blindness in our country during productive ages

On August 6th, the College of Ophthalmologists of Baja California, under the leadership of Dr. Irma Zamudio, organized an awareness walk focusing on the visual health of people with diabetes, marking a significant step towards educating and preventing eye-related issues associated with this condition. The walk began at the Monument to the Free Textbook and concluded at the Torre de Agua Caliente.

Diabetes has become the leading cause of irreversible blindness in our country during productive ages, Dr. Zamudio emphasized that 19% of the population suffers from diabetes, and even after the pandemic, this number doubled, causing concern among ophthalmologists throughout Mexico.

Dr. Irma Zamudio has shown her commitment by promoting the importance of early detection and comprehensive care for individuals living with diabetes. The awareness walk, which brought together people of all ages, was an event that highlighted the need to maintain constant attention to the health of our eyes, especially for those facing challenges related to diabetes.

In an effort to provide accessible and quality care, the College of Ophthalmologists of Baja California launched the “Diabetic Eye Week.” During that week, free ophthalmological appointments were offered for people with diabetes in Tijuana, Ensenada, and Mexicali, allowing for early diagnosis and the opportunity to address any ocular issues before they worsen.
